What’s a zhong yi? In China, that means simply a doctor of Chinese internal medicine*. An acupuncturist is like the Western medicine surgeon, while the zhong yi is more like the pharmacist or the internal medicine doctor. The zhong yi and the acupuncturist speak the same language and some of our treatment principles overlap somewhat, but the tools we use are different. I use herbs exclusively. How to Take a Useful Tongue Picture

 

Chinese medicine diagnostics are reliant on the so-called “four examinations.” These diagnostic methods consist of:

  1. Observation: where by visual information is used to guide the diagnosis.
  2. Palpation: in which touch is used, this is where we get in to pulse and abdominal diagnosis.
  3. Listening & Smelling: this listening consists of hearing what a cough sounds like for instance. The smelling is obviously using your nose to determine what’s going on diagnostically.
  4. Inquiry: this is where a practitioner will ask many questions.
