In Chinese medicine, the so-called “middle” refers to the digestive organs and upper abdomen. This formula then is for abdominal pain that is aggravated by pressure or touch. Usually this will be aggravated by cold foods or weather because there’s cold inside causing the pain.

We have a saying that when there is flow (of qi, blood, food, whatever) there is no pain. However when there is pain, there is no flow (of qi, blood, etc.) Just as in nature, cold will freeze things and prevent movement. When this takes place internally, it hurts a LOT!

Fortunately, we have the Major Construct the Middle Decoction for that!

Ingredients:

Chuan Jiao :川椒 fruit of Sichuan pepper, Chinese prickly-ash, zanthoxylum Pericarpium Zanthoxyli Bungeani
Gan Jiang :乾姜 dried ginger rhizome Zingiberis Rhizoma [Pregnancy Note]

• These two herbs are very warm in nature. If ice cream causes pain, think of these herbs as doing the opposite. They warm to support a comfortable digestion.

Ren Shen :人蔘 ginseng root Radix Panax Ginseng
Yi Tang :飴糖 malt sugar, maltose Maltosum (not included, but available online) [Pregnancy Note]

• These two herbs are used to support the digestive functions, not by warming, but via other mechanisms. Malt sugar is sold in a syrup form which you are welcome to track down and use, but because it isn’t available in extract powder form, it isn’t included in the formula. If we added syrup to your formula, that would be VERY messy by the time it got to you.

This formula can be used to support health with or without symptoms. If symptoms are present, take 1 level teaspoon of the powder (8 capsules) three times daily. When symptoms are not present, take 1/2 level teaspoon (4 capsules), two times daily. Empty stomach is best for efficient absorption, but not essential. [More...]
