Citrus and Crataegus Formula (Bao He Wan)

Details of Citrus and Crataegus Formula
Shan Zha or Hawthorn Fruit helps digest meat and lower cholesterol.

Shan Zha or Hawthorn Fruit helps digest meat and lower cholesterol.

Our favorite formula for digestion. We always have some handy.

This formula is called a “digestive” formula in Chinese medicine. This says that it helps the body digest. This means the formula is for sluggish movement from the stomach down through the intestines.

Bao He Wan helps you digest foods that are difficult to digest. You may feel bloated or “stuck feeling” in the stomach even several hours after a meal. You can use it just once or as many times as you need it.

Now, this formula helps a lot but obviously, you’ll want to pay attention to what you’re eating and look into finding out what is not easily digested and of course eating less of that.

Foods that are difficult to digest include greasy, fatty, deep-friend, dairy, meaty things. If your restaurant has a take-out counter, you may be eating foods that are tasty, but ridiculously unhealthy. I’m guessing that I’m not telling you anything new on this one.

Often the “Bao He Wan” tongue has a thick and greasy coat.

Sometimes, you simply haven’t got the “umph” to push out your stools. This is the formula specifically for this condition.

It isn’t a purgative, there is no irritating the intestines to stimulate the bowel movement, rather this is a gentle formula that is taken over time at a low dosage to address the digestive functions while at the same time gently moisturizing the intestines to help guide out the poop.

One of the key ingredients in this formula is Bai Zhu atractylodes which has been shown by research in China to be particularly effective for this unique kind of constipation.

This constipation is unique in that it arises with a sort of lack of strength in bearing down. Another unique symptom of the pattern that this formula addresses is that one can feel fatigued after passing a bowel movement, even to the point of passing out.

Irritable bowel syndrome has only been identified by conventional Western medicine over the past 20 years or so. However, in Chinese medicine, the so-called “liver-spleen disharmony” has been around for much longer.

As such, there are some well developed therapeutic herbal approaches this stress-induced form of disorder.

The cause of this disorder comes down to how the nervous system responds to stress. When one is being chased by a bear, the nervous system ignores the digestion and focuses on blood flow to the limbs and muscles such that one can run away if necessary. However in modern times, while we’re not being chased by too many bears, our bodies can’t tell the difference between a threat from a carnivorous bear, and a work deadline.

As such, stress can undermine the natural regulation of intestinal peristalsis (downward movement of the contents of the Stomach and Intestines.) This is the most common cause of irritable bowel syndrome there is.

Apricot Seed and Linum Formula (ma zi ren wan)

Details of Apricot Seed and Linum Formula
Apricot seeds stop cough and lubricate the large intestines.

Apricot seeds stop cough and lubricate the large intestines.

Moistening and nourishing, this formula lubricates the intestines for itty-bitty hard-as-rock stools.

This formula uses cannabis seeds as the source of oil in this formula. Oil is important for dry stools as it helps guide and lubricate the feces out of the body more comfortably.

Currently in the USA, we’re not allowed to import marijuana seeds for this purpose anymore. I’m told that if there is proof that the seeds have been processed such that they cannot be germinated, we can use them.

Fortunately, this ban on cannabis seed import doesn’t seem to affect the importation of the extract powders that we use at EagleHerbs. Obviously, you can’t grow a plant from the “freeze dried” extract of tea, so we’re good to go.

Other ingredients in this formula stimulate intestinal movement by acting on the nervous system, and other herbs generate body fluids to help moisturize the dry poop.
