Constipation

las.diarrheas ConstipationConstipation can be uncomfortable at first and even life threatening if it really gets out of hand. Chinese herbal medicine has many safe and effective, even non-habit forming solutions to this common problem.

The use of Chinese herbs can regulate the numerous organ functions needed to efficiently absorb the nutrients in your food, and then expel the waste.

This page describes some of the key points that allow you to recognize your unique root-cause which can help you choose the correct herbal formula to address both the root-cause as well as the branch-symptom of constipation. Some of the formulas described on this page are available only with a consultation due to their potential for abuse.

Which kind of constipation do you have?

  1. Constipation aggravated by stress, PMS, or combined with diarrhea [more]
  2. Constipated poop that is dry and hard [more]
  3. Constipation associated with fatigue [more]
  4. Constipation in the wake of a high fever [more]
  5. Constipation associated with overeating [more]

Root-Cause: Qi-energy Stagnation

  • cons.1 ConstipationIn this context, “qi” is associated with intestinal peristalsis or the downward squeezing action of the Stomach and Intestines. This is often stress-induced.
  • Constipation that is aggravated or induced by stress may also arise alternating with loose stools. Poop can begin hard, end soft. Or arise as “bridge mix” stools (marble sized-pellets).
  • “Qi stagnation” in the context of intestinal movements means that the nervous system isn’t regulating the downward squeezing action of the colon quite right. Our bodies are designed to put-off digestive functions when we’re being chased by a bear. At that time, the heart rate increases and our bodies prepare to run away or fight for our lives. Pooping isn’t terribly important when you’re fighting off a lion or something. However in modern times, the lion may never go away. Living with constant stress is like telling your intestines that there is danger in the shadows. As such, your body prepares for problems by turning off intestinal movements leading to this type of constipation.

Root-Cause: Blood or Yin-Fluids Deficiency

    • In Chinese medical theory, the blood and/or body fluids are necessary to lubricate the passage of poop through the intestines. If one is chronically anemic or dehydrated, the feces can become dry and difficult to expel. To determine which you may have, blood or yin-fluids deficiency, see the tongue images below.
    • Key Branch-Symptom: dry, hard poop.
    • Formulas: Hemp Pills (Ma Zi Ren Wan) plus additional herbs for blood deficiency if necessary. [more...] Note: there is nothing psychoactive about the ingredients of this formula. Moving on…

Root-Cause: Qi-Energy Deficiency

  • When one has a general lack of energy, the strength of the muscles necessary to push out one’s poop are also weakened. This leads to a constipation more common in the elderly
  • Key Branch-Symptom: normal poop, once it comes out but associated with extreme fatigue.
  • Formula: Astragalus Decoction (Huang Qi Tang) [more...]

Root-Cause: Heat in the Stomach and Large Intestine

cons.gan.sui Constipation

Many Chinese herbs look like what they treat such as dried feces in the intestines.

  • High fever damages the body fluids (biomedicine: “dehydration”). The lack of fluids in the Large Intestine causes the poop to get dry, hard, and difficult to expel.
  • Key Branch-Symptom: recent history of high fever, dry hard stools.
  • Formula: Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction), The formula for this particularly strong and could potentially be abused by those obsessed with losing weight.
  • Because of the risk of abuse, this formula can only be obtained with a one-on-one interaction with the herbalists from Eagle Herbs.
  • Please see “custom services” to initiate this process.
  • If you’d like to get something close, try the Modified Hemp Pills (Ma Zi Ren Wan) mentioned above. [more...]
  • Pictured here is Gan Sui (Radix Euphorbia Kansui). Notice how its roots actually look like impacted fecal material in the intestines. This is consistent with the herb theory known as the “doctrine of signatures”. This particular herb is not offered at EagleHerbs due to its cathartic action which may have its place under controlled conditions such as a hospital, but not as an on-line purchase. “Cathartic” is stronger than a “purgative” which is stronger than a “laxative”.

Root-Cause: Food Stagnation

  • cons.5 ConstipationWhen your food is difficult to digest, the movements of the Stomach and Intestines are compromised leading to sluggish or constipated stools.
  • Key Branch-Symptom: sluggish, smeary poop with a strong odor.
  • Formula: Citrus and Crataegus Formula (Bao He Wan) [more...]
