Huang Lian 黃蓮 coptis rhizome Rhizoma Coptidis

  • This is a very bitter (and orange colored) herb. The bitter flavor is said to make things descend.
  • Huang Lian “dries damp” and “clears heat”. Damp-heat is considered an especially unclean environment that is conducive to the growth of parasites, bacteria and other unclean entities. In the same way, there are more diseases found in hot-humid swamps than there are in cold-dry arctic regions. Huang Lian cools and dries the hot and humid internal environment such that it isless welcoming to parasites.
  • Because of Huang Lian’s potent cold and bitter nature, it can be hard on the digestion. If while taking this formula, the stools become soft or runny, that is okay as long as the poop has a strong odor and perhaps a burning sensation. However if the loose stools become clear and watery you should either lower the dosage of this formula or stop taking it entirely if it has achieved its therapeutic goal. The herbs that PROTECT described below are added to prevent Huang Lian’s bitter descending nature from causing problems.
Coptis was used for ulcers long before bacterial causes were discovered for ulcers.
