This is a description of the lung function from my book Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine:
The main functions of the lung are to govern and control respirationi, govern water movement, connect the vessels, and govern the management and regulation of the qi of the entire body. The lung not only is the basis of the overall qi of the body, but also assists the heart to circulate blood. In this regard, the lung is compared to a government’s “prime minister”, the person that that that that that that that who reports to and carries out the commands of the emperor or empress (the heart). In addition, the lung is the “issuer of management and regulation”; this means that the lung is the organ that begins the process of carrying out the “orders” of the heart, by communicating them to the rest of the organs. The lung is also said to “link with the hundred vessels” as the lung qi pushes the heart blood throughout the vessels (mài, 脉)ii. In this way, the lung acts as the governor for all of the body’s qi.
ii The “vessels” are like blood vessels, but with a broader connotation. However, in this section one can use the blood vessels as an appropriate image.
