Details of Four Miracle Pills
Wu Zhu Yu is the little purple dots in this image. Very strong taste, like a sweet aromatic pepper.
Alternative Names
This formula warms up the digestive processes in order to more efficiently firm up the stools.
This formula can be taken long-term, but if one is hypersensitive to cold temperatures, there are likely other symptoms that may appear due to this same lack of metabolic heat (or “yang” as we say in Chinese medicine.)
As such, pay attention to related products that may appear on this page, or look around for other formulas for yang deficiency that may apply to you.
Proper and efficient digestion relies on the body’s yang energy. In this context, yang is metabolic heat. When the metabolism of the body in general is deficient, the efficiency of the digestion is also going to be weakened.
The reason that this sort of diarrhea is most prevalent in the early morning hours is because this condition is really due to a lack of heat in the body. The early morning hours are the coldest hours (energetically and thermally) and thus the body simply can’t keep the fecal matter in the body at this time of the day. Cold isn’t just a lack of heat, it can be an extra energy in the body too, which is another reason that the body responds with a bowel movement. The body can expel cold through the bowels, just like heat can be expelled through sweat.
Ingredients
Bu Gu Zhi ่ฃ้ชจ่ psoralea fruit Psoraliae Fructus [use caution if pregnant ]
This herb always smells like coconut to me. I consider that something of a plus. Oh, and it warms the Kidneys and regulates the fecal elimination functions too. Why bring up the Kidneys? The Kidneys (capitalized, because they are different from the scientific, biomedical concept of the kidneys) are considered the source of all warmth in the body. Warming the Kidneys then will warm the digestion and regulate the poop quality.
Rou Dou Kou ่่ฑ่ป nutmeg seeds, myristica Myristicae Semen
Not only does this “warm the digestion” like the herb described above, but because it “moves qi” it also regulates the pain that arises from other intestinal problems.
Wu Wei Zi ไบๅณๅญ schisandra fruit Schizandrae Fructus
By definition, it has five tastes (wu wei zi means “five taste seeds”), but it is the sour that really comes out. Sour makes you pucker up and scrunches up your face. It has a similar effect in the intestines, it causes them to seal up anything that’s going out too much.
Wu Zhu Yu ๅณ่ฑ่ธ evodia fruit Fructus Evodiae Rutaecarpae
Another warming herb which is what it is doing in this formula. We also use this herb to regulate the Liver and Spleen which is to say that it is good for stress-induced Stomach problems.
Da Zao ๅคงๆฃ jujube, Chinese date Jujubae Fructus
There are a lot of warm, drying herbs in this formula. This can cause some problems in the Stomach if it gets too hot and dry. So, this herb is added to prevent that particular side-effect from taking place.
Sheng Jiang ็่ fresh ginger rhizome Zingiberis Rhizoma
This is an herb that strengthens the efficiency of the digestion with a warm action as is needed for this particular condition (early morning diarrhea).
He Zi ่จถๅญ myrobalan fruit, terminalia, chebgium Chebulae Fructus
Another astringent herb, like Wu Wei Zi above. This wasn’t in the original Si Shen Wan, but it is often added these days. Chinese medicine really respects the past, but we’re not against evolution either.
