I like this formula a lot for people with weak digestion. Often this translates as bloating with just eating a little food or even after drinking a little water. It is a more complex version of Liu Jun Zi Tang. I find people tolerate it better than Liu Jun Zi Tang. It also forms the basis of Gui Pi Tang which has an added component of slight anxiety and forgetfulness and insomnia.
Ingredients
Dang Shen 党参 Codonopsis
Codonopsis strengthens the efficiency of the digestion which results in better formed stools.
Bai Zhu 白术 bai shu ovate atractylodes, Rhizoma Atractylodes Macrocephala
Atracylodes is a big digestion support herb. By stimulating the efficiency of the digestion, foods can be property and efficiently digested, which provides the immune system with the necessary nutrition to work at optimum levels.
Gan Cao 甘草 licorice root Radix Glycyrrhizae [caution ]
As is common in most Chinese herb formulas, a little gan cao is added to the mix to help the herbs work together well. Gan cao is considered a very sweet herb. I think of this herb as being like a very sweet person who can help individuals who are arguing get along better. That’s exactly what it’s doing here, helping all the other herbs work together. The world could use some gan cao, don’t you think? :)
Chen Pi 陳皮 aged tangerine peel, citrus Citri reticulatae Pericarpium
Ban Xia 半夏 pinellia rhizome, pinellia tuber Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae
Fu Ling 茯苓 sclerotium of tuckahoe, China root, hoelen, Indian bread Poria Cocos
The three herbs listed above dry excessive fluids. When fluids collect in the stomach or intestines, the outcome is gurgling, nausea, and loose or sloppy stools . Chen pi (tangerine peel) and ban xia (Pinellia) actually “dry” while fu ling (poria) moves the fluids to the bladder to be excreted as urine.
Huo Xiang 藿香 Pogostemonis/Agastaches Herba/Patchouli Pogostemonis/Agastaches Herba
This superstar with the strong aromatic taste is famous for “piercing stomach turbidity”. You don’t want a turbid stomach as it causes nausea .
Sha Ren 砂仁 amomum fruit, grains-of-paradise fruit Fructus Amomi
Another strong aromatic, just a dash of this herb is potent enough to settle the stomach .
