  • Dr. Cheng’s Dioscorea Hypoglauca Decoction to Separate the Clear
  • ็จ‹ๆฐ่†่งฃๅˆ†ๆธ…้ฃฒ
  • Tokoro Drink to Separate the Clear (from Awakening of the Mind in Medical Studies – 1732 CE) modified

About this formula: this is a modification of Bei Xie Fen Qing Yin which is famous for “seperating the clear from the turbid”. That’s generally a reference to addressing cloudy urine. However with a few modifications, it is an excellent approach for nocturnal emissions due to damp-heat.

Damp-heat arises more easily in young men who run hot to begin with. As an example of this “running hot” notice how young people are perfectly comfortable in chilly weather wearing nothing more than a t-shirt while older people bundle up. In our youth, and especially adolescence, “yang qi is exhuberant”. Yang qi is body heat, emotional passion, hormones, etc.

Damp-heat can originate externally too. Hot humid weather is a good example, but more often, especially among young men, is the damp-heat that arises from a fast-food diet. If it’s deep-fried or causes obesity, you can pretty much assume that it is a generator of damp-heat internally in young men. Beer and alcohol also cause damp-heat.

Ingredients

Bi Xie ่†่–ข fish-poison yam rhizome, tokoro Herba Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae

  • This is that herb that addresses cloudy urine. Lacking that particular symptom, this herb serves as something of a back-up herb for when damp-heat seeps into the bladder leading to cloudy appearance in the urine. One might also consider this herb for retroflex ejaculation as well.

Fu Ling ่Œฏ่‹“ sclerotium of tuckahoe, China root, hoelen, Indian bread Poria Cocos

Che Qian Zi ่ปŠๅ‰ๅญ plantago seeds Semen Plantaginis

Bai Zhu ็™ฝๆœฏ bai shu ovate atractylodes, Rhizoma Atractylodes Macrocephala

Shi Chang Pu ็Ÿณ่–่’ฒ sweetflag rhizome; acorus Rhizoma Acori Graminei

  • The four herbs listed above all excrete dampness in the body (via the urine). That last herb, Shi Chang Pu not only helps to dry dampness, but it focuses on the dampness in the heart that causes problems with mental focus and potentially wet dreams as well.

Huang Bai ้ปƒๆ ข amur cork tree bark, huang bo, phellodendron bark Cortex Phellodendri

  • This herb straddles two groups of herbs on this page. It dries damp like the group of four above, and it cools heat like the four herbs below.

Chi Shao ่ตค่Š red peony root Radix Peoniae Rubrae

Dan Shen ไธน่”˜ salvia root Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, Salviae miltiorrhizae Radix [caution]

Sheng Di Huang ็”Ÿๅœฐ้ปƒ Chinese foxglove root, rehmannia (fresh),Rehmannia root Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae

  • The four herbs listed above all cool off the blood. To put that into modern terms, it will cool-off a hot head. Naturally I’m referring to the head above your shoulders. However when the blood is hot, it can generate some neurological activity at night leading to wet dreams as well.

Lian Zi ่“ฎๅญ lotus Nelumbinis

  • This is one of many medicinal herbs that come from the lotus plant. It has an effect on the human heart but not so much the blood pumping muscle but rather human emotions. Should heat rise to the heart, the outcome is making a big deal out of little things, restlessness, irritability, intense dreams, and wet dreams. So, this is something of a chill pill for the heart.

Gan Cao ็”˜่‰ licorice root Radix Glycyrrhizae [caution]

  • Gan cao (licorice root) is used to get all of the above ingredients to play together better.
