This is a very potent formula for those with heat in their Stomach, Large Intestine and Heart. This heat can cause restlessness, panic attacks, and generalized anxiety . However a more contemporary application of this formula is in the treatment of social anxiety associated with bad breath or anal odor .
Is it my breath?
Chinese medicine doesn’t teach that anxiety is all in your head, rather it’s all in your Heart .
The (Chinese medicine concept of the) Heart is said to store the spirit. When there’s a problem in the Heart, the spirit is disturbed. Anxiety resides in the unsettled Heart, altering our entire perception of the world.
This formula addresses the kind of anxiety that arises from heat or fire in the Stomach and Intestines. This heat also causes stinky problems such as bad breath and anal odor that arises from heat or fire in the Stomach and Intestines. This heat also causes stinky problems such as bad breath and anal odor .
Heat in the Stomach can also cause problems along the trajectory of the Stomach channel such as bleeding gums, sores inside the mouth, and acne .
Heat in the Large Intestine can arise with dampness, in which case yellow, explosive and especially foul-smelling diarrhea is the outcome. Gas may arise from dampness and heat in the Large Intestine too. This is that really potent smelling gas that we used to call “silent but deadly ” as children. Very little quantity, but very strong odor that may actually burn the anus.
If this heat in the Stomach and Intestines is allowed to stay remain long enough, it can dry up the fluids and give rise to constipation with hard dry poops .
Ingredients
Huang Lian ้ป่ฎ coptis rhizome Rhizoma Coptidis
This is a very bitter (and orange colored) herb. The bitter flavor is said to “dry damp” and “clear heat”. The heat clearing function removes that sense of restlessness or anxiety that one might get. None of the herbs in this formula are particularly sedative, they don’t make you sleepy but they do calm you down when there’s heat in the Heart such that normal sleep patterns and general peace of mind can return.
This herb is also of great benefit to those with chronic foul, bad, or offensive breath or anal odor . In addition to the heat that is removed from the Heart (see above) it is also an incredible herb for clearing heat from the so-called “yang ming” or the Stomach and Large Intestine. These two organs are essentially two ends of the same tube. As it turns out, “heat stinks ” and many things that are labeled as “heat” in Chinese medicine usually include some sort of offensive or foul smelling symptom such as bad breath, a funny taste in the mouth, or anal odor . The anal odor can be described as the smell of that gas that we called as kids “silent but deadly ” which is to say a very small quantity but with a very strong odor which may even burn the anus.
(Zhu Sha ๆฑ็ Cinnabar Cinnabaris (Not included in modern formula)
It is unfortunate that we can’t use this herb in this formula. In Traditional medicine, it is processed in such a way that the mercury is removed rendering it safe for use. However the risks of mercury poisoning are great enough to warrant us not using it in the USA. See Hu Po for the replacement below.)
Hu Po ็ฅ็ amber Succinum (a spirit calming replacement for the toxic zhu sha Cinnabar)
This is petrified tree sap (amber). It is like a rock, and rocks are heavy. Some heavy things are said to calm the Heart because the spirit that resides in the Heart is so light and easily disturbed, like a balloon in the wind. This herb works like a string attached to a rock to tether down the balloon and prevent it from getting all blown about. To put this another way, it is a calming herb. This herb is also known to address “dream disturbed sleep ” which isn’t necessarily bad dreams, but intense dreams . So it calms down the spirit to allow one to sleep better at night and be more calm, cool, and collected during the day.
Dang Gui ็ถๆญธ tangkuei, Chinese angelica root Radix Angelicae Sinensis [supports pregnancy ]
When the Heart gets hot (or is on “fire” as we say) it can damage the blood and the body fluids in the same way that a soup that is simmering can lose its fluids and get thick. Dang Gui helps bring back some of those fluids that are lost, specifically the fluid called blood. When there is adequate blood in the body, the Heart is better nourished and thus calmer . This herb is also known to assist in the passage of hard, dry poop when the heat in the Stomach and Large Intestine has dried up the fluids there
Sheng Di Huang ็ๅฐ้ป Chinese foxglove root, rehmannia (fresh),Rehmannia root Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae
Here’s another herb to nourish the blood and body fluids that the fire in the Heart is presumed to have damaged. This herb also cools off the blood. When the Heart is hot, it can heat up the blood and cause excessive or inappropriate bleeding such as nosebleeds or excessive menstrual flow . Hot blood is also the cause for excessive passions, especially anger. If you get so mad that your blood boils , this herb (and formula) is for you!
Zhi Gan Cao ็็่ licorice root Radix Glycyrrhizae prep. [caution ]
There are a lot of really cold herbs in this formula to put out that Heart fire. However excessively cold herbs run the risk of causing some stomach ache or intestinal discomfort . That’s why we add this herb to soften the action of the harsh heat clearing herbs and protect the stomach. People often say that Chinese medicine doesn’t have side-effects. That’s mostly because we’re smart about how we construct these formulas. This is a good example of preventing problems before they occur.
