“Although the kidney organ is attributed to water, it contains an element of fire as well. (One could visualize this as the pilot light on a gas stove.) This fire in the kidney is called the “ministerial fire” or the assistant to the heart’s “sovereign fire”. Water and fire issues, being a complementary pair, or occur simultaneously. When water is weak, then fire easily burns out of control and consumes or “boils away” the water. When there is weak fire either from the heart or the kidney, the fluids can leak out of their proper place as in incontinence, diarrhea or edema. The bones, ears and the “two yin” (anus and urethra) are also associated with water.”
