Details of Chrysanthemum Powder to be Taken with Green Tea

The lovely “mum” is a popular and delicious cooling herb.

Alternative Names

  • Ju Hua Cha Tiao San

Ingredients

Ju Hua 菊花 chrysanthemum flower Flos Chrysanthemi Morifolii

Jiang Can 僵蠶 silkworm; body of sick silkworm Bombyx Batryticatus

These two herbs are added to the famous formula “Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San” which is for the headache associated with the common cold, stuffy nose, or chills. The addition of these two herbs make this formula for the same condition, but with more fever and less chills.

Bo He 薄荷 field mint, mentha Herba Menthae Haplocalycis

Jing Jie 荊芥 schizonepeta stem or bud Herba seu Flos Schizonepetae Tenuifoliae

Fang Feng 防風 saposhnikovia root, ledebouriella root, siler Radix Ledebouriellae Divaricatae

These herbs are said to push “wind” out of the body. Cold and flu viruses travel through the “wind”. However in Chinese medicine “wind” also includes being exposed to the external elements.

Chuan Xiong 川芎 Sichuan lovage root, cnidium, chuanxiong root Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong

This herb is used for all headache formulas. You wouldn’t want to use it alone, just as you don’t sit down for a bowl of salt, even though it tastes great as a seasoning. In Chinese medicine, pain is due to the lack of movement of either qi or blood. This herb supports blood circulation and has an affinity for improving circulation in the head.

Qiang Huo 羌活 notopterygium root, chiang-huo Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii

Bai Zhi 白芷 angelica root Radix Angelicae Dahuricae

Xi Xin 細辛 Chinese wild ginger, asarum Herba cum Radice Asari (not included in online version)

These three herbs open up the nasal passages, but don’t cause drowsiness like anti-histimines. They’re aromatic like Vicks Mentholatum®.

Gan Cao 甘草 licorice root Radix Glycyrrhizae [caution]

This herb is added to most herbs to soften their harsh properties and prevent what might be called side-effects.
