Details of Modified Shen Ling Bai Du San

This formula is a modification of Shen Ling Bai Zhu San . We have modified it for accompanying nausea and more diarrhea control. The formula may take a week or two to have an effect and may be taken safely for over a month to fully resolve the issue.

This is appropriate for chronic “Spleen Qi Deficiency”

The following is a description of Shen Ling Bai Zhu San.

“It is an amazing mixture that can be used long-term digestive issues because of their slow tonification of digestive process, but it also includes some quick acting ingredients as well.

If your diarrhea is a chronic condition lasting more than six months, consider a lower dosage but get enough to last a month or two. If your diarrhea is a more recent arrival, you can take a higher dosage to knock out this condition before it has a chance to become chronic.

  • Our “Bible” of herbal formulas, Formulas and Strategies, says: In such cases (of Diarrhea) , the spleen qi has become deficient and the intestines have lost their stability and capacity to absorb.  This results in unremitting diarrhea to the point of incontinence….Long term diarrhea not only leads to deficiency of the spleen qi and yang, but also invariably involves the kidneys.  This aggravates the diarrhea, which further injures the spleen and kidneys, which in turns worsens the diarrhea, and so on in a vicious circle….

Shen Ling Baizhu San (Ginseng and Atractylodes Formula), a well-known formula for spleen qi deficiency and diarrhea, is described in Formulas and Strategies as indicated for “loose stools or diarrhea, reduced appetite, weakness of the extremities, weight loss, distention and a stifling sensation in the chest and epigastrum, pallid and wan complexion.”

Ingredients – Modified Shen Ling Bai Zhu San

Fu Ling 茯苓 sclerotium of tuckahoe, China root, hoelen, Indian bread Poria Cocos

  • Dries damp (which ends up coming out as diarrhea), supports the digestion (which prevents creation of dampness), and calms the spirit (everybody loves a calm spirit.)

  • Tai Zi Shen is a gentler form of Ginseng. It is a cooler form and helps tonify the spleen.

Bai Zhu 白术 , bai shu ovate atractylodes, (white) atractylodes rhizome [supports pregnancy]

  • Another digestion supporting herb. Number one herb for Spleen Qi Deficiency.

Lian Zi 蓮子 lotus seed Nelumbinis Semen

  • This herb addresses diarrhea with an astringent action, works like a sponge to absorb fluids to regulate excessive passing through the stools.

Shan Yao 山藥 dioscorea rhizome, Chinese yam Dioscoreae Rhizoma

  • Supports digestion

Yi Yi Ren 薏苡仁 coix seeds, Job’s tears Semen Coicis Lachrymae Jobi [don’t use if pregnant]

Jie Geng 桔梗 balloon flower root, platycodon root Radix Platycodi Grandifolii

  • This herb is usually used in support of the Lung functions. It has a lifting quality that is actually used to guide other herbs to the Lungs. However it is this lifting quality that makes it beneficial in the treatment of diarrhea too. Chinese medicine theory can consider diarrhea too much “down”. Western medicine would more likely consider this intestinal movements that are too fast. This herb helps regulate that downward motion by adding a little bit of “up” energy to slow the “down” movement of the intestines.

Qian Shi  芡實 Semen Euryales -Strengthens the Spleen and stops diarrhea
