15 Huang Jing Polygonatum sibiricum
10 Chen Pi Pericarpium citri reticulatae
10 Bai Bu. Stemona japonica
10 Wu Wei Zi Schisandra chinensis
10 Chi Shao Paeonia lactiflora Pall
15 Huang Qin Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi
15 Jie Geng Platyconia. (added)
This is an interesting formula. Simple yet, “elegant”. “San Huang” translates as “3 Yellows”. There are other ‘3 yellow’ formulas but the Huang Qin, Huang Qi and Huang Jing are an interesting combinations.
Cough can come from too much mucous or dryness. Sometimes they happen at the same time.
Huang Jing tonifies (benefits) the 3 areas (jiaos); upper (lung), middle (spleen and stomach) and the lower (kidneys).
Chen Pi helps dry phlegm while Bai Bu moistens the lung.
Huang Qin clears lung heat.
Chi Shao clears heat as it moves blood.
Wu Wei Zi consolidates the kidney (or the adrenals in Western medicine).
I’ve added Jie Geng which directs the other herbs to the lung and opens the lung up.
Finally Huang Qi raises the Qi so the other herbs can do their job.
All in all, a very elegant and balance formula for lung weakness and cough.
