Details of Settle the Emotions Pill
image of fu shen and fu ling

Fu shen is the “heart” of Fu Ling which calms the “heart” in people.

This formula is for anxiety or jumpiness, specifically for someone with a timid or indecisive nature.

About this formula: “settling the emotions” is a common treatment principle in Chinese medicine. However the method by which a given formula will achieve that goal varies. This formula is best used with the kind of insomnia or anxiety that arises with a sense of fatigue or weakness.

The Chinese medicine syndrome that this formula is generally applied to is called Heart and Gallbladder Qi deficiency. The Heart stores the spirit, and when the Heart isn’t given adequate nourishment, symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, palpitations and poor memory are often the outcomes.

However, this “Gallbladder qi deficiency” is an unusual syndrome even by Chinese medicine standards. In the English language, we have a way of describing someone with courage to stand-up for themselves. We say that they have a lot of “nerve” or a lot of “gall”.

As it turns out, traditional Chinese culture also looks to the Gallbladder as a source of courage and decisiveness. As such, those with a deficiency of Gallbladder qi can be timid and indecisive too. Never fear, Ding Zhi Wan is here!

Ingredients

Ren Shen 人蔘 ginseng root Radix Panax Ginseng made from real ginseng

  • Of course ginseng is perhaps the most famous energy tonics in the world, but did you know that it has a calming influence as well? Sometimes fatigue can generate a sense of anxiety.

Fu Ling 茯苓 sclerotium of tuckahoe, China root, hoelen, Indian bread Poria Cocos

Fu Shen 茯神 spirit poria Poriae Sclerotium pararadicis

  • These two herbs are actually the same herb, but Fu Shen is only the inner-most core of the Fu Ling. When we talk about an artichoke heart or a palm heart, we’re talking about the softest inner-most portion of something. In Chinese medicine, these inner cores often have the word “xin” or “heart” in their names. Often, these inner-portions of a plant will have an effect on the heart in the human body too. The Heart (capitalized to denote the Chinese concept) stores the spirit in Chinese medicine. This isn’t so much your immortal soul but your personality or your affect. This spirit is called “shen”. Fu Shen, therefore is the portion of Fu Ling that calms the shen or spirit.

Shi Chang Pu 石菖蒲 sweetflag rhizome; acorus Rhizoma Acori Graminei
Yuan Zhi 遠志 Chinese senega root; polygala Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae [use caution if pregnant]

  • These two herbs are commonly used together for “phlegm misting the Heart orifices”. That can mean anything from poor memory to severe dementia. In this formula, these two herbs are devoted to the memory problems that can arise from a Heart that lacks qi. They calm the spirit too.

Hu Po 琥珀 amber Succinum

  • In the original formula, Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) was used to calm the spirit. Nowadays we use amber instead. There are are a few ways to calm the spirit (for anxiety, insomnia, etc.) in Chinese medicine. One is to support the Heart qi (see ginseng above), another is to calm the spirit with heavy medicinals such as minerals including amber. The spirit is thought to be a light floaty kind of thing in Chinese thought. You can give it weight by nourishing what is missing, or simply anchoring it down with a rock. This herb is the rock that anchors the spirit.
