This formula is getting a lot of attention although the exact ingredient list hasn’t been published as far as I’ve found. But the name is literally the combination of two formulas (listed below). You could also order the two formulas separately and get a little bit more flexibility with the ratios.

Shan Zha or Hawthorn Fruit helps digest meat and lower cholesterol.

This formula is getting a lot of attention although the exact ingredient list hasn’t been published as far as I’ve found. But the name is literally the combination of two formulas (listed below). You could also order the two formulas separately and get a little bit more flexibility with the ratios.

Bao He Wan. Our favorite formula for digestion. We always have some handy.

This formula is called a “digestive” formula in Chinese medicine. This says that it helps the body digest. This means the formula is for sluggish movement from the stomach down through the intestines. Take this just after a meal if you are continually having that stuck feeling.

Often also eating too close to bed-time (even several hours for some people) can disrupt the sleep mechanism. (The body is doing too much processing and won’t go into sleep mode.)

Bao He Wan helps you digest foods that are difficult to digest. You may feel bloated or “stuck feeling” in the stomach even several hours after a meal. You can use it just once or as many times as you need it.

i have put this under the tiredness category because food stagnation can often slow the body and mind down. All of which of course can make you tired.

Now, this formula helps a lot of different things and you can take it in conjunction with other herbs. However and obviously, you’ll want to pay attention to what you’re eating and look into finding out what is not easily digested and of course eating less of that.

Often the “Bao He Wan” tongue has a thick and greasy coat.

Lian Qiao 連翹 forsythia fruit Forsythiae Fructus

  • When food is stagnated in the Stomach and Intestines, it generates heat. This is a Chinese medicine thing, not so much something you’ll find with a thermometer. Still, this heat can rise up to the (Chinese) Heart and causes restlessness, irritability, and generally adds to the sense of discomfort on an emotional level.
  • When you eat too close to bed time, the Stomach’s activity can generate heat and cause nightmares or dream disturbed sleep.
  • This herb removes heat from the Stomach and Heart to address these emotional/mental issues associated with food stagnation.

Fu Ling 茯苓 sclerotium of tuckahoe, China root, hoelen, Indian bread Poria Cocos

  • One of the outcomes of food stagnation is the production of “dampness” which is basically excessive fluids in the Stomach and Intestines, or fluids elsewhere that show up as edema. This herb is a mild diuretic that helps get the fluids out of the intestines through the urine.

Ban Xia 半夏 pinellia rhizome, pinellia tuber Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae [supports pregnancy]

  • This is another herb that address dampness in the Stomach, but in this formula it is also quells nausea which often arises when the Stomach contents are not descending correctly. This herb helps descend the Stomach contents.

This formula is for anxiety or restlessness.

More importantly, this formula has at its base an important seven-herb combination used for dampness in the digestive tract with heat in the heart (which then causes restlessness, anxiety and insomnia). This Warm the Gall Bladder Combination is actually another modification on a damp-resolving formula known as Citrus and Pinellia Combination. Chinese medicine formulas tend to build on past successes.

He/with She  Yi Wen Dan Tang. Note that we have substituted Mu Li for Zhen Zhu Mu. Zhen Zhu Mu may provoke a seafood allergy as well as not being kosher.

Ye Jiao Teng 夜交藤 corydalis rhizome Caulis Polygoni Multiflori

  • This herb is a vine that nourishes the heart. This produces a sense of calm, peace.

Zhu Ru 竹茹 bamboo shavings Caulis Bambusae in Taeniis [supports pregnancy]

Huang Lian 黃蓮 coptis rhizome Rhizoma Coptidis

  • These bamboo shavings “clear heat” from the “Heart”. Coptis removes heat from the “Stomach, Large Intestine and the Heart”. Let’s face it, you don’t want heat inside of you when you’re trying to relax. No matter where the heat comes from, it ends up rising to the Heart where internal heat causes restlessness and anxiety. Obviously this is Chinese medical theory again.

(Ban Xia 半夏 pinellia rhizome, pinellia tuber Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae [supports pregnancy])

(Chen Pi 陳皮 aged tangerine peel, citrus Citri reticulatae Pericarpium)

(Fu Ling 茯苓 sclerotium of tuckahoe, China root, hoelen, Indian bread Poria Cocos

  • These three herbs “dry damp” which is the underlying problem in this pattern. Too much fluids in the body, usually arising from the stomach and digestive processes. This dampness can ultimately lead to facial bloating or edema. These three herbs help regulate the fluid metabolism for the dampness. You might find yourself urinating a little bit more on this formula, fu ling is a diuretic that helps excrete the excess fluids in the body.)

Zhi Shi 枳實 unripe bitter orange, chih-shih Aurantii Fructus immaturus [use caution if pregnant]

  • Ever notice how standing in line can make you restless and anxious, but when you’re moving, it is less of a problem? This herb gets your insides moving to address some of that sense of restlessness or anxiety.

Shi Chang Pu 石菖蒲 sweetflag rhizome; acorus Rhizoma Acori Graminei

Yuan Zhi 遠志 Chinese senega root; polygala Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae [use caution if pregnant]

  • These two herbs are commonly used together for “phlegm misting the Heart orifices”. That can mean anything from poor memory to severe dementia. Dampness is a precursor to phlegm. This formula addresses both. These two herbs calm the spirit too.

Mu Li

Gan Cao 甘草 licorice root Radix Glycyrrhizae [caution]

  • Gan cao (licorice root) is used to get all of the above ingredients to play together better. It’s sweet nature has a calming effect on any harsh properties that the other herbs may have, but it also adds a calming influence to this formula.
